At least two people have been confirmed dead after four gunmen attacked a popular luxury resort in Dougourakoro, to the east of Mali’s capital, Bamako.
According to government officials, one of the victims was a French-Gabonese but they are yet to confirm the nationality of the other. Speaking to Associated Press, Moussa Ag Infahi, the country’s director of the national police, said that the security forces managed to rescue 36 hostages after killing three of the assailants while the fourth escaped.
The released hostages told reporters that the gunmen shouted “Allahu akbar” (“God is great” in Arabic), a slogan that is increasingly being associated with jihadists.
